Witchcraft In Rural Ireland
I took the photo above while living in Ireland in 2007. The place is a village called an Fhairche, Clonbur-just over the mountains from my grandparents farm.
When I walked in here, I found a whole load of crows that were sitting in the church when I walked in on them, their eruption of flight was took quick for me and my camera. Hence I was left with an empty church to photograph.
The ancient looking symbols which were daubed in the doorway may mean something to do with liberation, in this case from the church? A reclaining perhaps of holy ground from chirstianity.
I'd guess Wiccans or Pagans of some kind did it.
It had also been set on fire at some point, hence the water on the floor.
It was a Protestant church, back when these things mattered, built in the 1800s at the instigation of the British authorities tried to implement the Church of England in this area, but it never had much interest; now there is hardly any interest at all in the hurch except in these mountainy areas.
Since I took the photos, the church has been restored and is apparently a visitors centre but don't quote me on that, please ask before entering obviously.
Feel free to contact me for usage.
